how to switch energy providers

Energy bills are some of our biggest annual expenses. With prices continuing to rise – but more options available – you can save £££s if you decide to switch energy providers.

Before you make the switch it’s useful to compare energy deals to find one that will save you money, both in the short and the long term. No matter what your provider you will be able to switch. Even if you have a prepayment meter with debts of up to £500 you can still move to a new energy provider.

Making the switch

When you’ve found a new provider, check the terms of your existing contract to see if you can leave without paying a fee to cancel early. You should be able to leave up to 49 days before the end of your tariff’s end date without being charged a fee – all providers offer this.

Switching energy suppliers is very simple. All you need is:

  • The details of the company that currently supplies your electricity and gas, as well as the name of your tariff.

  • Your usage. This should be on your last annual energy statement.

  • Bank details. So that you can set up a new direct debit.

Once you have this information simply go through the process of entering your details and complete the instructions for making the switch. Your new energy provider will handle everything from that point onwards. All you need to do to finish the process is provide meter readings to old and new suppliers and settle any outstanding bills.
