Broadband is the most popular way that internet users in the UK connect. Similar to a telephone line, broadband is constantly available, never switched off and provides a continuous point of access to the internet.

The technology essentially transmits data at high speed, allowing for faster internet access. The faster the speed the better quality you will have for browsing online, streaming films or downloading music, for example.

Types of broadband

ADSL broadband – this is accessed via your local telephone exchange. The broadband speed that you can get with ADSL broadband will depend how far away you are from the telephone exchange.

Fibre broadband – fibre broadband is generally considered more reliable than ADSL. Cables are made from a fibre optic material that is less subject to degradation and allows for faster speeds.

Mobile broadband – you can use mobile broadband wherever there is a mobile signal. Most major phone networks offer 3G and 4G broadband, with access provided via a USB dongle or a MiFi.

Choosing the right type of broadband

When you’re picking a broadband deal there are some factors to bear in mind.

Unlimited data – if you’re a regular, heavy internet user then an unlimited data deal will be essential. However, if you’re really only doing light browsing and sending emails, capped data could save you money.

Faster speeds – if you’re streaming, downloading and browsing heavily then the faster speeds make life easier. However, bear in mind that they tend to be more expensive and minimum contracts can be longer.

Bundles – if you’re also looking for TV and phone services a bundle deal could be a great way to save.
