A Fair Usage Policy (FUP) is something that you’ll come across if you sign up for an unlimited broadband service. Effectively, it is a cap on your unlimited service that is set by what the provider believes to be a ‘fair use’ of the service. This means that if you go over what the provider considers to be fair use, the excess won’t be included in your unlimited broadband deal.
What does Fair Usage Policy Mean?
Although FUP caps were a great scandal when they were first discovered they are not that common anymore and most providers offering unlimited usage are really providing just that. Today, the FUP is less about how much broadband you’re using and more about how you’re using the service i.e. not illegally. However, most will require you to use the service in a way that could be reasonably expected for domestic purposes i.e. you’re not downloading excessively high levels of data. Even if you’re a seriously heavy user you shouldn’t run into any problems with the FUP.
Traffic management
While many providers don’t have a usage cap a large number do practice traffic management. This basically means that at peak times certain services are given priority, such as audio streaming and gaming, and some customers on certain packages may have priority over others.
