broadband & VoIP – a beginners guide

VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. It is the common term used for being able to make phone calls over the internet. Wherever there is a relatively strong connection it’s possible to use VoIP to make phone calls online, rather than via the local telephone company.

How does VoIP work?

VoIP turns analogue phone signals into digital signals that are sent over the internet. This can be done either via a VoIP phone, via a piece of external hardware or via software applications like Skype.

What are the benefits of VoIP?

VoIP calls cost less than making phone calls via your usual local phone provider. This makes them a great option for businesses trying to save money, as well as for those looking to make phone calls overseas. If you’re using a service such as Skype then the service is free, other than what you’re paying for the broadband supply.

VoIP offers better functionality than traditional phones too, including the ability to video call and to conference in others anywhere in the world at the same low cost.

Are there any disadvantages to VoIP?

Only those that come with any internet connection. So, if connectivity is an issue already this could affect VoIP calls and you may find you have problems with voice quality. Security is also another area for caution, as with any online communication.
