Car insurance is essential for UK drivers. Not only does it ensure that you can cover the cost of any accidents or damage you experience while in your car, but it’s a legal requirement too.
What does the law say?
Every motorist is required by law to have their vehicle insured. The insurance should cover you the driver, as well as any other named drivers.
What types of policy are available?
You can choose a car insurance policy based on the type of cover you need.
Third party – this is the minimum car insurance required by UK law. It will cover you if you cause damage or injury to others while in your car.
Third party, fire and theft – in addition to the coverage provided by third party insurance, this type of policy will also cover you for the car being stolen, damage during a theft, as well as fire damage.
Comprehensive cover – this covers all of the above, as well as additional cover for events such as accidental damage, medical expenses and windscreen cover.
How can you reduce what you pay?
Telematics – your premium is determined by your driving behaviour, which is monitored by a black box attached to the car. The better you drive, the better chance you have to pay less for car insurance.
Excess – most policies will set a compulsory excess and this is the amount that you will have to contribute towards any costs that arise. You can also opt to pay a voluntary excess i.e. take on more of the cost of any repairs etc and this will reduce the overall cost of the insurance.
