how can you get cover for accidents at home?

Accidents happen. That’s a fact. And, given the amount of time many of us spend at home, it’s no surprise that this is where plenty of damage and destruction occurs. Many household insurance policies don’t include accidental damage at home as standard but it can be a really useful option to have.

What is accidental damage?

Accidental damage is a one-off incident, usually caused by another human being (or by you). As a result of the incident, something that you own is broken or ruined. Some good examples might be smashing the TV screen, spilling red juice on a white carpet or dropping a laptop.

What is not accidental damage?

If damage has occurred over time – for example wear and tear on a sofa or carpet – this won’t be covered. It’s also worth noting that most accidental damage policies won’t cover damage caused by pets. So, if your cat scratches a hole in an armchair that won’t come under the policy.

Is it worth it?

Accidental damage cover usually adds between £20 and £100 to an annual policy, which is well worth it if you need to replace something like a laptop or sofa. Whether it’s a good idea for you depends on your home – if you can see any of the situations below occurring then it’s worth considering:

  • A ball kicked through a glass window
  • An overflowing bath damaging the ceiling below
  • Spills on carpets and furniture
  • Damaging a water pipe while doing DIY
